Streatham’s transformation from a small Surrey village began with the arrival of the Westminster and Vauxhall bridges followed by major improvements to the local roads. By the 1850s these changes made the area an attractive place to live. Close to London for work yet far enough away to offer a more rural way of life, Streatham drew in prosperous residents seeking the best of both worlds. The advent of the railways from 1856 bringing Streatham not one but three stations really put the place on the map.
However, if you look closely, traces of Streatham's village past still remain. This excellent guide is essential for anyone seeking out the places and personalities of old Streatham.
