Tooting Bec

Tooting Bec was the principal village of Streatham parish. Settled by the followers of a Saxon named Tota in the 5th century, this Heritage Trail highlights many aspects of early local history little known today.

There is also much to see of Victorian and Edwardian Tooting Bec which evolved as this now busy London suburb developed.

The trail concentrates on Tooting High Street where there was once a manor house and later several large mansions. It proceeds along Garratt Lane, part of the Streatham parish boundary, to Plough Lane where the Surrey Iron Railway ran from 1803. Some of the track bed is used by the Croydon Tramline system today.

The village of Tooting Graveney is highlighted where you can visit the parish church of St Nicholas. Tooting Graveney held the distinction of being Surrey's smallest parish.
